The MT6589 may not be the first quad-core processor, but it is the first to be made in Cortex-A7’s image. The architecture is known for its low power profile and dual-SIM (dual active) capability. As such, processors based on Cortex-A7 are generally used for low-cost solutions. The Mediatek MT6589 is made using 28nm manufacturing process and it offers HSPA and TD-SCDMA support. The SoC includes PowerVR Series5XT GPU, support for multiple displays, GPS, Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi, FM radio and GPS. It comes with comprehensive support for 3D technology, including real time conversion from 2D to 3D.
The MT6589 supports up to 13Mp rear camera, 1080p display resolution, 1080p (30fps) video recording/playback and DTV-grade picture enhancement. The SoC manages to perform these impressive multimedia capabilities while maintaining low-power consumption. MediaTek is a lesser chip maker in mobile industry, but it continues to prosper thanks to close partnerships with various Chinese phone makers like Lenovo, ZTE and Huawei.
