ZTE will soon release the first Nvidia Tegra 4 smartphone in the market, the ZTE Geek U988S. The company originally planned to use an Intel processor, but instead users will get Nvidia’s newest SoC. The 1.8GHz quad-core processor will be paired with 2GB of RAM for decent multitasking performance.
The screen resolution will also bumped up from 720p to 1080, while the front-facing camera will be doubled to 2Mp from 1Mp. The rear-facing shooter is still 8Mp. It’s good to see that the Chinese phone maker decides to update the phone with more respectable specs.
But unfortunately, the phone is exclusive to China’s largest mobile operator, the China Mobile. It would work on the proprietary TD-SCDMA network and there’s little chance it will be available for International users.
The U988S is built upon the design of the original ZTE Geek, which was unveiled on April 10th. The phone hasn’t arrived yet and supposed to arrive in Q3. It’s not clear whether the Atom-powered Geek will arrive as scheduled or it will be replaced entirely by the more capable U988S.
