The smartphone industry continues to expand and it appears, Android device manufacturers are the biggest beneficiaries of this trend. According to latest figures released by the UDC, shipments of Android smartphones reached nearly 190 million units in Q2 2013, giving the platform 79.3 percent market share. With over 72 million smartphones shipped last quarter, Samsung benefitted the most in the Android ecosystem.
Although the number of iPhone units Apple shipped in the past quarter has increased, the company’s market share drops slightly due to the ever-increasing popularity of Android devices and the steady growth of Windows Phones platform. However, there’s currently a lull between releases of iPhone models and we should see a bump of iOS share in the market, when Apple releases the iPhone 5S and the low-cost iPhone.
At the moment, both Windows Phone and BlackBerry OS are still the battle for the 3rd place, but the end result could be clear, since BlackBerry’s market share continues to shrink.
